Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffins with Pecan Streusel
I wanted a warm, cozy pumpkin recipe the kids and I could all enjoy. This is it. Even the baby inhaled hers.
The crumb is soft and spiced, with chocolate chips and toasted pecans all the way through. On top goes a glazed pecan crumble, then a drizzle of maple syrup the minute they come out of the pan, and a sprinkle of flaky salt. Don’t skip the salt. It’s what brings them to life.
The base is adapted from Butternut Bakery. I bake a mile closer to the sun, so if you’re at high altitude too, my adjustments are in the notes.

- Toast the pecans. Put all 1 1/4 cups chopped pecans in a dry skillet over medium heat. Stir often for 4–6 minutes, until fragrant and a shade darker. Move 3/4 cup to a plate to cool. Leave 1/2 cup in the pan.
- Glaze the crumble pecans. Turn the heat to medium-low. Add the butter, 3 tbsp brown sugar, 1/4 tsp cinnamon and pinch of salt. Stir 1–2 minutes, until the sugar bubbles and coats the nuts. Don’t walk away; sugar burns fast.
- Cool and crumble. Spread the glazed pecans on parchment and let cool until firm, about 10 minutes. Break into small clusters and toss with 2 tbsp flour.
- Preheat. Heat the oven to 350°F (325°F for a dark metal pan). Lightly grease the top rims of a 12-cup and a 6-cup muffin tin (or plan to bake in two rounds) and line 16 cups with paper liners. Don’t skip the liners; without them the edges bake hard.
- Mix the wet ingredients. In a large bowl, whisk the pumpkin, both sugars, oil, eggs, vanilla and sour cream until smooth.
- Add leaveners and spices. Whisk in the baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves and salt.
- Add flour, chips and pecans. Whisk in the flour until about halfway combined. Add the chocolate chips and the cooled 3/4 cup pecans. Fold gently with a spatula and stop the moment no dry flour remains; overmixing causes tunnels and a dense crumb. Cover and let the batter rest 30 minutes.
- Fill and top. Divide the batter among the 16 liners, filling them nearly to the top. Scatter the glazed pecan crumble lightly over each. Don’t press it in.
- Bake 25–30 minutes, until a toothpick in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs. Check at 20 minutes; if the topping is browning fast, lay foil loosely over the tin.
- Finish and cool. While they’re still warm in the pan, drizzle with maple syrup and sprinkle with flaky salt. Let rest 5 minutes, then move to a rack.
